Preventing the Worst Sprawl-Inducing Roads and Development Projects

Communities across the South are growing at an unprecedented rate. In many communities, resulting development has been scattered and poorly planned and is consistently linked to a wide array of problems. Auto-dependent sprawl development is destroying rural areas and natural resources, drawing investment from existing communities and undermining long-term economic prosperity. Additionally, increased pollution is harming human health. And by making the use of cars a necessity, rampant sprawl is isolating children, elderly, low income, and disabled individuals.

The public increasingly recognizes the damage caused by sprawling development, and transportation and sprawl have become hot political issues across our region. Although some progress has been made to promote more sensible land development and more sustainable transportation, much more needs to be done.

SELC's Land and Community Project uses a combination of public education, policy reform, and legal advocacy to protect our ecosystems and rural landscapes, promote attractive, prosperous communities, and push for more effective, sustainable transportation choices.
