  • Electric utilities are responsible for more than 60% of mercury emissions.
  • Has advised against consuming fish from 183 miles of its rivers due to the risks of mercury contamination.

Georgia

  • Among top 15 states with highest mercury emissions from power plants.
  • Electric utilities are responsible for more than 70% of mercury emissions.
  • Has advised against consuming fish from 2,209 miles of its rivers, 25,866 acres of its lakes, and all of its coastal miles due to the risks of mercury contamination.
  • Georgia's Southern Company in 2002 had the second highest emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and mercury of any power company in the country. In addition, as a state, Georgia registers as one of the nation's top-ten polluting states for sulfur dioxide, mercury and carbon dioxide.

South Carolina
